Jerzy Buzek hosts First Europe-U.S. LNG Roundtable

On Wednesday, 27th May 2015 Jerzy Buzek hosted in the European Parliament the First Europe-U.S. LNG Roundtable.

High-level policy-makers and business representatives from both sides of the Atlantic discussed political and legal aspects of possible trade in natural gas, also in a wider framework of global energy security, the Energy Union and currently negotiated Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Agreement (TTIP).

“Worrying events in European Neighborhood reminded us about our heavy dependence on energy imports…. Our response to those challenges is the Energy Union – including diversification of external suppliers, sources and routes… It is hard to find a more natural and reliable partner for energy cooperation than the United States,”– said Jerzy Buzek.

In his keynote Šefčovič, EC Vice-President for Energy Union underlined EU’s openness to energy cooperation, especially with its strategic allies. The European Commission is planning to present an EU LNG Strategy in the coming month.

Following an exchange of views between politicians and business representatives, Jerzy Buzek concluded the political panel: “Today’s event demonstrates that partnership in energy field is gaining momentum on the both sides of the Atlantic.  A good base for the US-EU gas partnership could be created already now – once the US administration lifts licensing requirements and EU completes its infrastructure. The currently negotiated TTIP could be a great opportunity to take this partnership even a step further.”
