Gas supply will never again be used as political weapon

“A legally-binding solidarity mechanism and a harmonised EU-wide list of protected customers mean that gas supplies will no longer be used as a political weapon or an instrument of blackmail”, commented Jerzy Buzek MEP, Chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and Rapporteur on the Regulation on measures to safeguard the security of gas supply, adopted today in plenary.

Security of gas supplies: solidarity as a legal obligation

“Solidarity is not an empty slogan: it is a duty, now enshrined in law. We cannot rely on goodwill and voluntary schemes if the supply of gas to a Member State from outside is cut off. We need a binding mechanism to deliver gas to every protected consumer, be it a household, hospital or district heating installation, in every EU country in need”, says Jerzy Buzek, Chairman of EP Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and rapporteur on the Regulation on measures to safeguard the security of gas supply.

The European Parliament today hosted a debate on "Nord Stream 2 - Energy Union at the Crossroads", proposed and co-chaired by Jerzy Buzek MEP, chair of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. It was attended by European Commission Vice-President for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič who gave the keynote speech as well as by representatives of Ukrainian government. It is for the first time that representatives of the Nord Stream 2 consortium were extensively questioned by members of the European Parliament.

Jerzy Buzek in Washington D.C.: Let’s make energy a pillar of our cooperation with the US!

Jerzy Buzek, Chair of Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) of the European Parliament paid a three-day official visit to Washington D.C. last week. He met with the Congressman, representatives of the Federal Government, think tanks and business community. The main focus of his visit was cooperation in energy field, and especially liberalisation of transatlantic LNG (liquefied natural gas) trade.

Greater Birmingham and the West Midlands – exhibition at the European Parliament

From 22nd to 24th of September the European Parliament was honoured to hold an exhibition dedicated to advanced manufacturing, design and innovation from Birmingham and West Midlands region. The event was hosted by Neena Gill MEP with the support of Birmingham City Council and the Greater Birmingham and West Midlands Brussels office. Key figures such as Sir Albert Bore, CoR member and Leader of Birmingham City Council; Lord Jonathan Hill, Commissioner and Jerzy Buzek, MEP were asked to attend the opening of the event.

On 15 September the conference “Science Meets Parliaments”, co-organised in the European Parliament by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the EP's Science and Technology Options Assessment (STOA), brought together scientists and policymakers from the European and national levels together.

The main prize of European Business Club Poland goes to Jerzy Buzek

On 12th of September Jerzy Buzek has been awarded with Victoria Europae, the main prize of European Business Club Poland. The awards ceremony took place in the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów. This year for the very first time the European Business Club's chamber decided to honour individuals and companies, which in a particular way contributed to the development of entrepreneurship, economy, science, culture and sport in Poland, as well as succeeded on the European and global level.

EPP Group discusses energy security and defence in Katowice

The EPP Group held its Bureau meeting in Katowice on 3 and 4 September to discuss its policy on the external dimension of energy security and defence. As external and internal aspects in both security and energy are intertwined, MEPs tackled the key issues on how to ensure higher external energy supply for the European Union and to make sure the EU is able to ensure the protection of its citizens in the changing security context.

Launching Czech V4 presidency

“Geopolitics, Energy and Central Europe: What Next?” was the topic of the launch conference of the Czech presidency in Visegrad Group held in the European Parliament on 14 July. Jerzy Buzek delivered a keynote speech together with Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka and Vice-President of the European Commission for the Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič.
"After 1.5 decades in the NATO and a full decade in the EU, our countries may have different views on some issues. But we still share many goals, and working together towards them can still bring a lot of added value. Energy security seems to be one of the biggest of them – and our top priority“ – Jerzy Buzek said in his speech.
